1st Annual Santa Anita Park Winners’ Circle BBQ Championship

Morning training

There is something mesmerizing about a thoroughbred horse in full gallop with nostrils flaring with the jockey hanging on as if for dear life.  The sound of a British-accented announcer completed the picture for the BBQ teams gathered in Arcadia, California, for the 1st Annual Santa Anita Park BBQ Championship.  It was so cool to be in a BBQ contest in the middle of the grass oval with horses racing around the park.

Fourth consecutive GC in the last four events competed in

Amazingly, SYD’s winning streak continues with a 4th consecutive GC since Dec 2011 in the last four events with wins in Mesa and Havasu in AZ, and Knotts and Santa Anita in Calif.   At this contest, only 1.1428 points (661 to 662) separated the first, second, and third places, so it could have been easily Left Coast Oue or Butcher’s Daughter on top!  So many good teams and such tight scores are now the norm in contests in Calif.     A big congrats to LCO for RC and Butcher’s for third place.  I know Matt and his LCO crew want so badly to break through their 7th bridesmaid award.  I know they will get their long-time-coming GC soon.  I also know Donna of Butcher’s Daughter is going to crack the GC circle very soon.  Congrats to all who walked especially rookies who came out to duke it out for ROY 2012.   Several SYD 101 alumni came out to compete for the ROY took walks including Craig Andrich, Greg Patlan, and Jerry Aguilar (who finished 4th overall)

Great first year event by Ric and Ben at an awesome location.  Thanks much to Butch and Kyle for helping us out as the last team to make it in on Fri evening.   Thanks for Kathleen and Kelly for officiating, the judges, host, and volunteers.   A big thank you also goes out to my many local helpers including David, Rob, Javier, and Jasmine.
